Saturday, 04-03-23

Morning, everyone!  It's Saturday, the first Saturday in March and I gather it is going to be a chilly and dull  day.  On the plus side, the snow forecast for next week has changed to rain although, as it keeps changing from day to day, I don't think they have all that much idea really.

Yesterday was a super day, very much a Good News Day for me.

It started off with a message from Premium Bonds telling me of a win - not a huge win in any way, shape or form, but £125 is not to sniffed it, is it?  It won't make any difference to the monthly spend as I have any winnings automatically re-invested but it started the day off really well for me.

At Slimming World, I lost one and a half pounds.  The general aim is to lose between one and two a week so I was really very happy with this.  I also got my free book for buying a Countdown (which is just a way of paying for a block in advance) so I have that to browse through today  so I can mark likely looking recipes with post-its.
And then I won the raffle.  Again!  It was some food storage stuff - bag clips, zip-lock bags, foil trays and plastic trays.  All useful stuff.

My cleaner (just one this week) came early.  At first I was a bit 'oh, ooops' because Sharon was due too but then I realised if she did the kitchen first, it would all work out fine and it would then give me the afternoon free.
The best news of the whole day, though, was that Sharon's husband, who has been really ill for five or so years, has been declared to be in remission.  Oh, she was so happy; it was really lovely.
She did her usual excellent work on my crowning glory (as if!!) and now I feel neat and tidy again.

I was feeling rather tired during the afternoon and, having done two loads of washing through the morning, had a relatively clear conscience, so I chilled with my knitting, my Kindle and YouTube.

This might sound crazy but I am thinking of doing this - chop up  tomato (from the shop) and plant the choppings in a pot, just to see if any of the seeds grow.  Really, it is just to see what, if anything, happens.  Have any of you done this at all?  Please do say what you think in the comments.

For the first time in a while, I didn't sleep all that well last night and am feeling weary so I think I will take things easy if needed.  I have some ironing and a bit more washing to do and want to do some shedding (!) but, apart from that, it can be a nice, easy, restful day.
I hope you have a lovely day and are able to give yourself some Me-time.  xx

  1. Well done on the weight loss and premium bonds win (no luck for us with ours). And how lovely for Sharon and her husband, what a huge relief for them. Yes, take things easy today, Joy. We have a small bit of fresh food shopping to do first thing, then the rest of the day is our own. xx

  2. Lots of small wins, aside from the lack of sleep. I hope you will feel more rested tomorrow.
Your good fortune with the Premium Bonds made me smile. My dad would always make a big announcement whenever he won so much as £25 :) Xx

  3. Congratulations on your day of good fortune! I grow my tomatoes outdoors and when I find a split one I generally throw it into the part of the garden where I hang bird feeders or onto the bird table. I often find little tomato plants sprouting up in those areas! Often I would replant it in a pot and take into school - my children have had many a tomato from them! They didn't fruit as well but they still fruited. Fingers crossed yours will too.

  4. Last year Joy, my father in law planted the seeds
From just one pomadorino tomato from sainsrobbers and given that we live so far North we gave out 50 t plants at least and they cropped so much we couldn’t eat them all!!! Rachel xx

    1. Oh, wow. Thanks for this. It's a bit early for planting but give it a month - sort of beginning of April and splashing out on some heritage-type tomatoes from the shop . . .
      I feel quite excited now!

  6. Well done on your Premium Bond and raffle wins, you seem to be having a lucky streak this year, long may it last.

I've always found it very hit and miss with growing tomatoes from chopped up or discarded tomatoes. Some that had rooted in the compost heap with no intervention from me and were then transplanted did really well, but the ones that I tried to do from tomato slices were feeble little plants that just keeled over and died despite the fact that I looked after them more than the others. But it's worth a go, after all you have nothing to lose but the price of one tomato.

    1. I'm very good at killing little tomatoes that I grew myself - that's why I went over to buying little plants from a local nursery., It's worth a go though, as you say.
I read that if you have the full amount you are allowed in Premium bonds, the odds are a win every two months. I don't have that much but Dave and Anna did and, yes, they did seem to follow the stats. Mostly, it's the minimum £25, of course, but occasionally it's more and sometimes more than one number. If I keep up the low spend, maybe I can pop a bit in every month. After all, one can access it immediately, if one wants/needs to. xx

  7. I just know we will find lots of tomatoes growing in the garden from those that got a bit too ripe and fell off the plant. One has to love free tomatoes. Pretty sure you will get something from your planting.

    God bless.

    1. Thanks, Jackie. I'm definitely trying it but I won't start until April-ish sort of time because I don't have a greenhouse. xx

  8. You really did do well today!!!!
I won several hundreds of pounds on the premium bonds as a child but nothing in recent times - not sure how much I have anyway or if they can contact me!

    1. Maybe they can't. It's worth checking and you can do that online - you might have a fortune waiting for you!! Most unlikely, I know, but . . . Just Google Premium bonds and it comes up - it's now called NS&I - National Savings and Insurance. Then start an account. Then, unless you have the account number I guess you will have to ask - I'm sure they are used to people making that sort of query. If you have the account number, it might be very easy. Good hunting!! xx
