Friday

Good morning, everyone!  It's still dark (at half past six!!) but it doesn't feel particularly cold and the forecast is OK with showers not expected until this evening.  Yesterday was lovely and sunny - absolutely beautiful for October.

As expected, I didn't do an awful lot yesterday but I did do something I have been thinking about for ages - I bought a camping stove and some gas cylinders.
This may sound silly but, with the spectre of possible power cuts hanging over us, it is reassuring to have something that means I can heat food and water.  Only a single ring, I know, but one pots are fine.  The kitchen is well ventilated with a very efficient fan so it will be OK with care.
Obviously, I am hoping it won't be needed but it's nice to feel ready
If it's not terribly cold or wet (or both), I also have my Cobb to use outside.

Apart from that, I spent some time in the kitchen making lunch for today as an ex-colleague friend is coming around for lunch.  It will be so nice to see her again and I'm looking forward to catching up on everything.

Before then, it is Slimming World and my first weigh in for three weeks - so not looking forward to that but it will be nice to see everyone again.

And right now I need to finish my social mediating, get the kitchen sorted and do just a bit more prepping for lunch so I'm keeping this short and sweet.   Have a lovely day, everyone.  xx

  1. We have never bothered about power cuts before because from 1983-2021 we had a caravan the motorhome sitting up the side of the house. Need to have a think about what to do now although we could light our gas cooker with matches I think. Just remember, Joy, your fan won’t work if it’s an electricity cut and don’t wear your Oodie if you have the wee gas stove lit. ( I sound like your granny🤣) catriona

  2. Agree about the fan…probably better not to use the stove or indoors…have cold cuts and a cooler instead…salads…here in Florida we are used to this.

    1. I'm sure you are although cold cuts and salads are ok for warmer climes, not necessarily for below zero!

  3. Lol I lived in northern states all my life…electricity off often…just got used to it. Have lived in the south year and a half. I did teach in South a Carolina for five years. Hope it works out for you. I have been a vegetarian for thirty years so easy for me I guess. Just using those type of stoves inside is something we have never done…good luck.

    1. :-) Well, I am very much hoping it won't be needed but I saw on the news a short time ago that there might be cuts. For 'might be', I am reading 'will be'. xx

  4. Joy, I would happily cook meals like omelettes or a full English on on one of those little gas stoves in my kitchen. Tony and I have two of them that we take out with us in the car. He's cooked many a bacon butty at the side of the road in the middle of winter. I'm sure you'll have a freezer full of quick one pan warm up meals that will be perfect to quickly warm through if necessary.

    1. That's the plan, certainly. A bacon butty sounds totally delicious!!! xx

  5. Please don’t use the camping stove indoors. Not safe even if windows are open.

  6. I've been wondering what I could use if we do get power cuts this winter. I was considering getting a Cobb and cooking outside if necessary, I know I won't be able to use it indoors because the charcoal briquettes give off carbon monoxide. I've also looked at the Wonderbags but that still needs a way of getting the food hot in the first place. All of which means I haven't decided yet! xx

    1. I think a lot of it is sheer common sense planning, to be honest. I am working on the assumption that cuts will be planned and scheduled so one can mostly prepare in advance. Hot water won't be a problem with the system I have and I have a nice selection of flasks to bring into use.
As for lighting- well, maybe candles but I need to dig out my torches and get batteries before there's a shortage of them too!!!

  7. It's a good idea to be prepared but hopefully there won't be too much disruption - the media do like to wind us up.

    1. They, do, this is true, although it was on the BBC which adds another layer of credibility and European governments have already informed their countries that there will be rolling power cuts. xx

  8. That's great to be prepared in a power outage. We have them here, as well. I put a four pack of Frappucinos in the fridge. That way at least I have my coffee.

How cold does it get in your part of the world, Stephanie? xx

  9. Having the camping stove will really be great during power outages. I have used ours a couple of times during those dreaded outages.

    God bless.

    1. Should it come to it, I think it will. It won't take long to heat up soup or baked beans or a pre-frozen and thawed something or other outside and, to be honest, it is just reassuring. Now to find my torches, check the batteries and dig out my fleeces, etc, and all's well! I like to be prepared and, if the best happens, I won't complain either. < grin >
