Wednesday

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Wednesday.  It's fine outside as far as I can tell - the sky is clear and light is just starting to emerge.  Yesterday was fine too and surprisingly warm for the time of year.

I didn't get as much done as I'd hoped, but it doesn't matter.  The cold is working its way through the different phases so now there's coughs and snuffles and it's all rather yucky but that's the nature of a cold.  With any luck it will have pretty much gone by the weekend.  I did quite a lot of resting up in between this and that.

Groove was, as always, good.  There are no sessions next week as it is half term and a new six week block starts at the beginning of November leading up to Christmas.  Then Lindsey does a two week 'festive' block and that's it until the New Year.  It doesn't seem very long at all.

Sharon came and snipped and styled and did her usual excellent job and now I feel neat and tidy again.  Because it is now so short, we decided it's going to need a visit every four weeks rather than the six week interval we have always had.  OK by me, I rather thought that would be the case.

A parcel arrived.  I think I said a while ago that something I have always wanted to do is get some musical Christmas crackers - the kind with little bells inside - but most of the family wouldn't really find that much fun.  However, this year I am entertaining a couple of Beth's friend (plus her and Alex) on Boxing Day and they will find this great fun, as will Beth.  I'm not sure about Alex but hopefully her will go along with it to keep the oldies happy!
So I went on Amazon, looked and ordered, and they arrived yesterday.

Today is Christmas Cake Day although that's a bit of a misnomer really - I will start the whole process today - weigh out all the stuff that needs soaking and get that started off and I'll probably prepare the cake tin too.  The actual baking will be at some point in the next week or so.  Delia says soak overnight but I like to do it a bit longer than that.

Before then, though, I have a circuits class.  It should be personal training but Lindsey has been asked to lead some INSET training.  I'm perfectly flexible about things like that and it's a good opening for her so she's giving me a freebie small group circuits class this morning and the PT session will just roll over.  Win win!

What are your plans for today - have a great day and stay positive and safe.  xx

  2. It's barely light here at just after 8 and we had a thunderstorm in the night.
Colds are such a bore aren't they, often carrying on much longer than we expect!
Love the sound of those crackers, we've not bought them for a few years but I might this year as we have a houseful which will be such a nice change for us.

    1. They are a bore, for sure, and it seems to be fighting back hard which is a right nuisance!
The crackers are lovely and, hopefully, worth the extra I paid by giving us lots of fun.
A thunderstorm - that's something we don't get round here. At night, they are so dramatic! xx

  3. It was so cold overnight here, with a strong wind making it feel even more so. It sounds like you have enough to do while you are continuing to recuperate, I'm glad you're feeling a smidge better. Today we are back off to Mum's to fix her oven door which she says fell off on Monday.

    1. It fell off!!! My goodness, how did that happen, I wonder. Hopefully, it will be easily fixed. xx

  4. Still warm here and though rain is forecast it'll remain warm. It will give the last of the squashes a final boost of growth before I take the plants out.

  5. Those crackers should be fun. I remember a few years ago at a party these were used as a musical game and there was so much laughter.
I shall be looking in my cupboards later on for Christmas cake ingredients and stocking up to make my cake. It seems to have come round very quickly.

    1. The year does seem to be rushing away at the moment, doesn't it?
The nice thing about the crackers, despite costing more than I would usually pay for crackers, is that the bells, etc, will last and can be brought out again next year. And, being a bit musical, I can use the 'notation system' (whatever it is) to transcribe other Christmas tunes, perhaps. xx

  6. We did the musical crackers one year ... great fun as we had plenty of people who wanted to join in, and I hope you enjoy yourselves on Boxing Day. xx

  7. Today was shopping at Walmart which always takes time, then putting all the groceries away, etc. I still need to strip the bed and put clean sheets on. Just a typical homemaking day. I did buy a couple Christmas ornaments for this year's tree and that always puts me in a festive frame of mind. I have been reading about Christmas Cakes and am tempted to make a "Christmas Cake American Style" for Christmas this year. Just the decorating of the cake sounds like fun!

    1. The decorating is great fun. I take ages trying to decide what to do each year. I haven't given it a thought this year but it'll probably be something very simple. xx

  8. You have me inspired to make a cake this year. I just read Delia's recipe and wonder what spreadable butter is, do they mean softened butter. Thanks.

    1. I've got some of the butter that spreads straight from the fridge but I really don't see why softened butter wouldn't work.
It's a really nice, classic recipe although I mix and match the dried fruit, adding cranberries and apricots to the mix. As long as it totals the right amount, it's fine.
      Enjoy making your cake. xx.

  9. Enjoy the tradition of your Christmas cake making. Christmas crackers are not a big thing here in the western part of Canada, but I can remember Mom buying them when we were growing up.

    God bless.

    1. I must look it all up - they're quite a thing over here and there are so many kinds to choose from. I honestly can't recall a Christmas without crackers. xx
