Sunday

Good morning, everyone.  It's a very autumnal feeling start to the day with a mist slowly clearing and the promise of a dry day to come.  The spiders must have been working their little socks off overnight too - the garden is full of webs, proper webs, not the aimless spinning they've done all through the summer.  Very pretty.

I took this five minutes ago.

A couple of garden happies too.  Autumn fruiting raspberries and strawberries.  The latter are no more, having just been washed and scoffed - delicious!

Thank you so much, everyone. for your advice and information in recent days.  After all the helpful stuff about Kindle Fire, you've been equally helpful and informative about Readly.  It would be something I could share with Beth, making it even better value.  So very kind, thank you again.

Yesterday was pretty much wall to wall TV, watching evening as they unfolded and enjoying the 'specials' shown in between.  I am finding the constant repetition and supposition of the announcers and 'special correspondents' rather irritating but it can't be an easy thing to do and I noticed that there were a few croaky voices at times.  I do hope they get time off in lieu later - or a good overtime rate.

I found the Declarations at St James' and St Paul's very impressive.  At times, the commentators seemed almost apologetic about the archaic nature of language and costume.  I felt that was totally unnecessary - I love that the future is so obviously connected with the past and I would much rather a great event like that is delivered clothed in an historic and time honoured fashion (albeit with 'silly' hats!) than at the end of a gun, whether it be loaded or ceremonial.
(and yes, I did have a chuckle over the military orders for taking off their hats to cheer the new king - it was funny!)
It's all part of what makes us us, grounds us in our past, and is precious, something to be valued.

As the day unfolded, I watched the queen's younger 'children' and their families , many visibly upset, of course, and learned that Anne will be escorting her mother's coffin back to London in a few days.  Heartbreaking for her but I would expect nothing else from such a strong lady.
And I enjoyed the sight of William, Catherine, Harry and Megan spending a very long time talking to people at Windsor.  I wish I was as slim and elegant as those two ladies but I am VERY glad I don't have to wear their shoes!

I started the real crochet blanket, the one that's a gift, and, as I thought, making it with the right yarn is a totally different experience.  Making it with different yarns culled from my stash helped me learn the stitches but was frustrating in terms of fitting everything together and the overall look and texture.  Using a consistent yarn is proving to be an absolute pleasure and I'm making great guns with it.
As a contrast, I'm also doing some Christmas gift knitting - some neck warmers;  everyone talks about the need for layers this winter to save on heating costs so I thought I would do my bit.  :-).  I'm using a fisherman's rib which is a lovely, thick, textured stitch that's also good and stretchy and perfect for this sort of thing.

So, when I've had enough of the crochet, I lay it aside and pick up the knitting instead.

I think today will be much the same as yesterday.  Telly on, watching historic events unfold, knitting, crocheting and reading with a bit of housework now and again.

How are you spending the weekend?  xx

  1. Oh my gosh…YES on the spiders. September always brings them and their stinky spider webs with them. I used a broom to clean them off the back porch this week.

    1. They really are mini works of art though - quite pretty, especially with dew or frost on them. xx

  2. It was like an obstacle course getting to the bottom of the garden today while avoiding all the spider webs!

I've stayed at home watching the TV coverage of events. I agree that some of the commentators are slightly irritating and I do get annoyed with the ones who get their facts wrong. But on the whole I think the coverage has been good. All the ceremonies and pageantry show the UK at its best ... something we excel at. xx

  3. I noticed a huge web across a couple of garden canes this morning. Those spiders are clever little things. I bet they'd crochet that blanket for you in record time :-)

  4. LOL - I wish they would help me with the hardest bit. I struggled with it for ages last time and I have forgotten how it worked. I will have to look carefully at the practise one again. Or, perhaps, substitute - I think it is one of the least effective sections anyway!

  5. I have also noticed more webs in the grass, and going down the stairs. I few times I actually got a mouthful of them.

    God bless.

  6. The television reporting has been on the whole very good hasn't it, as you say it's not easy filling airtime with suppositions, but mostly they have done well. And yes, I noticed a few voices getting croaky. The younger Royals walkabouts were very good for the crowds that had waited outside so patiently, I totally agree about the elegantly slim girls in their heels, I definintely couldn't manage that these days.

    1. I never could. I always went over on my rather weak ankles. Comfort before style nowadays.
Yes, I think they have done pretty well, all things considered.
