Wednesday

Good morning, everyone.  It's cold and dry out there and I'm quite relieved that I don't need to go out until later because I find that I do feel the cold a lot more since losing a lot of my inner insulation!!

Pottery yesterday was good.  She started us two beginners on slab pottery and thought that the Swiss cheese plant leaf would be worth a go so I had a go.

By the end of the session I had this.

As you can see, it's lying in a bowl mould to curve it up and once it's dried, it will need smoothing off and generally neatening up before firing.
For a first go, I think it will look OK and I loved doing it.

Less happily, I went online to book the course for next term and all the places were already taken.  That was so disappointing and I was more than a bit gutted.  I should have booked after last week when there were still places.  Then I decided to do a Pollyanna and make the best of it.  I went back into the site to see what other crafts they had on offer.  Surely there would be something?  Advanced Knitting?  Crochet for the Cack-Handed?  Sewing for the Elderly?

Guess what!  They also do an evening pottery course and, joy of joys, there were still places.  There's one less now as I booked right away.  OK, it's Thursday evenings, it's not the same group of people and I will have to swap my Swimming World group to the Wednesday group on those evenings but it's nothing that can't be organised.  And next time, I will book as soon as possible without any ifs, buts or maybes.

I'm so glad I looked.

Today I am meeting a lovely friend for coffee and a chat and then there's nothing much until tuition.  The evening is taken up with a Governors' Meeting so it's just as well I'm feeling a bit better, isn't it?

Have a great day, whatever you have planned.
xx

  1. For a beginner, Joy, that's excellent - another talent! Glad you managed to book onto another course, and that you're feeling a bit better.

    1. Thanks, Sooze. I was so disappointed when I saw that it was full so finding another time just lit the day up for me. I'm enjoying it so very much and I've wanted to have a go at pottery for - well, it must be decades. It's a real fulfilment for me.

  2. Oh, I love it Joy. It must be really satisfying seeing your work come together and I don't blame you for signing up to another class.
Glad to read you're feeling better. X

  3. Have you thought of putting yourself on the waiting list for your original group in case there is a cancellation?
I'm sure you've found a new hobby judging by your first two pieces.
Christmas presents solved for next Christmas! Sue

    1. I did wonder about that but there was no 'waiting list' link that I could see and then I found the evening course.
I think you're right, it is so satisfying. Never thought of Christmas presents but maybe, for those special people. At two and a half hours a week for nine weeks at a time, I won't be able to make much.

  4. Looking forward to seeing the final result of the swiss cheese leaf bowl, looking good already!
I think joining another class could be quite beneficial, new people, new ideas and maybe different techniques.

    1. I think it's the same tutor, just at a different day and time. It's good that there's a choice, I think. I could be wrong in my assumption though.

  6. Wow, that's brilliant. Are you generally quite artistic, as in drawing and painting, or is this a newly discovered skill where your obvious ability has come as a bit of a lovely surprise?

    1. I think that, as I go along, you will find that I'm in no way original. In that sense I have little real authentic creativity and I'm not being negative there, it's being realistic. That leaf - I saw a photo and have used a download to copy the design, for example. What I have always been able to do it be 'crafty' - good with my hands, so to speak - and to enjoy making things. The real creativity in the family comes out in my daughter.

I'm kind of concerned about the glazing of what I make. Brush stuff has never been my 'thing' so I guess you will see random and 'modern' stuff rather than what might be called 'fine art'. Again, Beth's the painter/artist. There has to be something in the old genes, but latent in my case. :-)
I don't mind - I love being able to make things and am quite happy with my limitations.

  7. It's really lovely! I'm glad you didn't give up and had a look around to see what else they offer. I'm glad you'll be able to continue on.

  8. I think that looks great! I think you are very creative myself, but if you won't accept that, very 'craft'y.
Can't wait to see the finished product!

  9. Love those leaves - one of my textile prints at art school was of cheese plant leaves.
Maybe there is an unknown but good reason why you missed a place on your class and will now be attending the evening class. I once didn't get on a course and had to take a different class and met a lifelong friend there. If I hadn't had to swap we may never have met!

    1. Who knows, eh? It's an opportunity and I am very grateful that I still managed to get a place that would work for me.
