Good morning!
I felt I got a lot done in a pretty short time yesterday at Dad's but, oh, it was so very difficult. I came home with more bits and bobs including several table cloths I found in a cupboard and a few garden chairs.
I managed to clear the garage freezer which is now turned off and waiting, lid up, for Gail to give it a good wipe out on Thursday when she goes there to clean.
By midday, the weather was starting to turn and, as the forecast was not great, I decided to leave rather earlier than planned. I stopped off at Bickerdike's on the way home and got something I had been looking for and by the time I was on home territory again the rain was lashing and the wind strengthening so I was thankful to be home. It is now dry, mild and still. Typical!
However, I totally forgot to cut any holly which has upset me considerably more than it should. I could kick myself, I really could. For many many years I have had holly from Mum and Dad but no more unless I can find the time and reserves for another drive up before Christmas - which is doubtful.
Today I have online personal training and then I need to don my Santa hat again and get pressies to J and to Beth, ready for our girls' get together on Friday.
The Christmassy thing is (looks at plan) candles and cushions. Nice!
Today's Christmas music is an old favourite, 'Walking In The Air' from that most Christmassy of all Christmas films, The Snowman. Beth and I always start off our Christmas Tree Day DVDs with this film - it sets the atmosphere so perfectly for us.This version is performed by that wonderful choir, Libera.
I am so sorry that you forgot the holly in your rush to get home - it would have been extra special this year being the last time you could cut any. Maybe there will be time for another visit - otherwise, I know it wouldn't be for Christmas exactly but there is nothing to stop you cutting some on your next visit after Christmas (as the berries will still be there for a while)and arranging it in a vase together with a lovely bunch of flowers - perhaps yours or your mum's favourites to display in the house. It could be a nice cheerful focal point during January and would not be as lost in all the other festive decor.
ReplyDeleteI know I have done things like that when we leave our cottage in Scotland as there is always so much to remember and at times we are eagre to get on the road - it can be so fustrating.🎄🎄
That is such a great idea, thanks very much. I will do exactly that! xx
DeleteAs others have said and I thought the same too afterwards to take a cutting or two - rooting powder might just be needed. If you search around the garden you might well find some little seedlings have rooted already in the ground that you can dig up as they do seed extremely well - we have almost transplanted enough for a hedge at the cottage in Scotland now from self seeded holly plants in our Yorkshire garden. Have a good look amongst the other plants and behind shrubs and under the bush itself as for some reason they like to stay well hidden in dark corners but I have a feeling you might find one. Good luck x
DeleteBrilliant, thank you. xx
DeleteGlad you got your planned jobs done. A shame about the holly. If the holly has berries you just might be able to propogate it and put in your own garden.
ReplyDeleteI will look into that, thank you. xx
DeleteGlad you got the jobs done yesterday but feel the holly frustration. I'm sending hugs and prayers for a lovely lady who I do enjoy visiting x
ReplyDeleteThanks very much. xx
DeleteHow frustrating that you forgot the holly but I like wherethejourneytakesme's idea in her comment above. Is there any chance you can take a cutting to replant in your garden or maybe at the allotment?
ReplyDeleteI need to go into how to take cutting, use berries, etc. There's bound to be info on Google somewhere.
DeleteThere's some lovely ideas above, aren't there. People are so lovely and helpful.
xx
Aww ... what a shame you forgot the holly :-(
ReplyDeleteBut I'm glad you avoided the worst of the weather, it was wild here yesterday too.
To be honest, I think we have had it light here compared to other places. Still not very pleasant though. xx
DeleteI'm sorry you forgot the holly, Joy - so much on your mind at the moment, it's not surprising, although very upsetting. Viv's suggestions to cut some after Christmas for a January display with flowers, and find a cutting or little rooted piece for putting in your own garden, are brilliant ideas. xx
ReplyDeleteThey are so good and so comforting, I'm very grateful to everyone. Bless you all! xx
DeleteEnjoying your Christmas month journey. We are enjoying the high 70's and low 80's still...love it love it love it...not my first December month in Florida, but my first living here in the condo Son bought for me to live in...at the Gulf...
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, that sounds so warm. We're hovering between 5C and zero at the moment which is pretty normal really.
DeleteI'm so glad you love where you are now so very much.
xx
It's a shame you forgot to get some holly. Perhaps you might manage another trip again soon.
ReplyDeleteWould you perhaps be able to grow your own tree from a small cutting? I did that with some when I moved into this house. It has grown really tall now. X
It would have to be in a pot but I do think that's the way to go longer term. I am looking up how to do it - it would be so nice if I could take a cutting from Dad's garden.
DeleteI'm going back again in the New Year and I'll cut some then and make it a New Year thing instead of a Christmas thing as people have suggested. That will be nice.
xx
Hugs to you. It's tough. No doubt about it. I keep thinking of Mum's rose bush outside the front door. I took lots of photos but still. She was so proud of them, how they kept blooming and blooming. Next year when I go the flat should be sold. I only hope the people don't get rid of the roses.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to accept that they might, isn't it?
DeleteHugs to you too.
