Thanks for all your comments on yesterday's post. I used to go for Dysons too and loved them but I found them none too reliable, sadly. I remember James Dyson on Tomorrow's World (remember that) talking about his ballbarrow in the 1970s. He wore a beautiful emerald green sweater, I think. Goodness, the things one remembers. At least I think it was Tomorrow's World and I think it was green . . .
It used to be a good company . . .
Anyway - after the third Dyson went on me (and I hardly gave it heavy use!!!), I got a Miele vacuum, not cheap (I was working and the kids had left home!) and have never got on with it. It's strong, robust, reliable but too heavy and the single use dust bags and filters are ridiculously expensive. And I do the stairs by hand because it's just too much of a faff.
It's a shame because it's a good machine, just not suiting me. It's lasted around twenty years so it's had a good run, it's still going strong, and I will keep it as a back up if needed, until the dust bags and filters run out.
(I inherited loads from Mum and Dad's house so it will probably be here after I have left this world, especially if I'm not using it much!!!)

The one I have bought is the Ultenic U20 Cordless. Not a name I recognised but some good reviews (you're never going to get 100% good reviews), including a personal one, and a good price for what you get in comparison to names like Dyson, GTech or Shark.
It's coming at some point today so - we will see, won't we?

I've finished the trial Sophie scarf, put it on and loved it. Because it's garter stitch, if is nice and flexible, wraps round the neck and ties comfortably and you don't have long dangling chunks of scarf. It may have just been a try out, bit I'm keeping it, not unravelling it, and I've started on using some of the yarn I bought. The lengths are a bit different but it's OK - you increase until you have used half the weight of yarn and then decrease.
Life is hotting up again.
Today I have the chat with Chris - face to face this time, seeing as neither of us has any concerns about infections now, and then I am off to see my friend Val and have another good old chat. And then in the evening it is the Slim Win chat.
Thursday is definitely chat day!
Thursday is definitely chat day!
Tomorrow is Slimming World, weekly shop and Alex's cooker lesson (must confirm that with him), Saturday is a Thermomix demo, making sushi this time, and Sunday is the 19th, Mum's birthday, so it's Christmas Cake day. I think I will set the fruit to soak on Friday so I can actually bake it on Sunday. Must remember to add stuff to my shopping list.
Time to get the day started. Have a good one, everybody, thanks for reading, thanks for all the comments and take care. xx
It is funny how many people have a particular day to bake our Christmas cake..mine is our church Crisis coffee morning weekend ...3rd weekend in November and usually my grandma's birthday date. Hope you don't come away with a sore throat with all that chatting!!
ReplyDeleteIt's around the time, isn't it, if you want to feed it and mature it. I think it is so nice to use a date with memories. Mum always made the family Christmas cake and it was always so delicious. xx
DeleteHello Joy,
ReplyDeleteit feels like a decade since we were last here on your blog but it is great to read that you are thriving and the days are filled with an amazing amount of activity.
And, how organised you are about the Christmas cake. We always have the best of intentions but that is what they stay....intentions and not the real thing. We reminisce about our mothers and their Christmas preparations and now we can add you to the list of the most prepared people we know.
Enjoy your day of chatting.
Welcome!
DeleteI think I have to set dates or they won't happen. It's not the sort of thing you can be spontaneous about really - too many ingredients one wouldn't normally keep in the house. It's nice to link a happy memory to an event. xx
Are you a fast knitter Joy? It takes me ages to finish anything!
ReplyDeleteHaving skipped making a Christmas cake last year I'll definitely be doing one this year, not sure when though 😀
Alison in Devon x
Medium fast, I would say. Whenever I sit down, I pick up either my knitting or my crochet - I find it hard to sit without something in my hands.
DeleteEnjoy making that Christmas Cake. It certainly brings it all closer, doesn't it? xx
Gosh your Christmas cake day already, isn't this year going so fast. It's a lovely tradition for you though, enjoy.
ReplyDeleteWe went through three Dysons too, selling the last working one when we converted to GTechs. We had two of the sort with the big ball and one stick version, which we both felt was neither use nor ornament, over the course of a few years.
It's only a couple of months to go now!
DeleteIt's funny how unreliable certain items can be. Sometimes I think the more clever they are, the more things there are to go wrong!
I love how you have a special day to start your Christmas cake and the memories of your Mom making hers.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Me too. It brings her closer in an odd sort of way. I don't ice it her way though - she did loads of swirls and rosettes and silver balls. Me - I may stress over the icing but it is way simpler and more modern. :-) xx
DeleteI gave up on Dysons as well. I've found my Vax vacuum to be brilliant, and it's much lighter. X
ReplyDeleteWorth knowing, thanks. xx
