My trip to the dentist yesterday was stress free, amazingly. I had Xrays, an examination and we (me and the dentist, Anthony) discussed implants. The good news is that the middle of the three teeth can continue to be on a bridge which reduces the cost a bit. The bad news is that the process will start with two extractions. Eeeeek!!
Anyway, he is sending me an email with all the info and detailed costings but I think I will go for it. Even if I decided on a plate instead of implants, I'd still have to have what remains of the two teeth out so I may as well go for the more permanent option.
He also said they could make me a temporary plate to wear through the whole process. It's a long one, what with complete healing and then time for the implanted implants (that sounds odd) to 'take' before finishing with the top bits so I might go for that option. I think I will have to see how expensive that will be because it's a very short term thing before I decide. It is very awkward having such a big gap at the front. Apart from feeling self conscious when I smile, it does affect my speech somewhat.
So - I have a date to start the process - the beginning of February! Time to get good and stressed!!!
Today the Christmassy thing is our Girls' Lunch Christmas Dinner. We're off to somewhere the other side of town, Great Baddow Barn. We fixed it ages ago but for the life of me I can't remember what I ordered or even if I went for two or three courses, as L organised it. I know I didn't go for the trad Christmas option. Fortunately, L will have all the details (I very much hope).
So, the pressies are all ready, the Christmas jumper is out and I have concocted a pair of clip on bauble earrings. Ho ho ho!
Today's Christmas music is much closer to home. Pete and Nicki Sims are leaders of a local and very active church and they are also musician/composers. This is one of their songs; Love Came Down.
I went all tense just reading your dentists stuff!
ReplyDeleteHave a good day out
Not surprisingly. So did I when he talked about it but there you go. The other tense thing is the cost but they really are the best option, should last me out, have a lifetime insurance and I do have the money (lump sum when I retired). I suppose I am investing in myself really.
Delete(and I'd have to have those two teeth out anyway!)
You have a good day too. How's the knee now?
xx
At least you can get Christmas over with before going ahead - I wish you well - no-one looks forward to having dental work done. x
ReplyDeleteThanks, Viv. I thought that too. I really didn't want to start before Christmas!

You're right that if you have the money implants are definitely the way to go. It's a long process though, so a temporary plate is a good idea and a fraction of the total cost. Topically, S is having implants done and his temporary plate snapped last night :( so he's dashed off to find an emergency dentist!
ReplyDeleteThanks, I appreciate that advice. Maybe I will take him up on the offer - six months with a great big gap is a bit daunting!

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to you too, Brenda.

P.S.
ReplyDeleteHow long did you teach and which grades? I love reading about your life and travels. your school...etc. thank you
How long - goodness. Well, I started in 1973, had six years out to have my children, went back part time at first and retired in 2015!

I love how Christmas meals can often turn out to be a surprise, having been ordered many weeks prior to the event. I have one today and, for once, I remember what I ordered.
ReplyDeletePlease try not to worry too much about your dental work. X
Fortunately, Linda had written it all down and brought the list with her. The only thing I wouldn have changed was the chicken wings I had as a starter. With half the front teeth missing, they were a bit messy! :-)
DeleteFortunately, the beginning of February is far enough away not to affect Christmas or the new year.
xx
I can't remember if I have posted this before ... but I had an implant about six years ago and it was worth every penny. Definitely get the temporary plate - as well as having a gap while the extraction sites heal, there will be a brief period when you have a fetching little peg in place, which is what the false tooth is attached to. Wearing the plate wasn't great, I had trouble with things like soft bread and cheese, but I couldn't face the idea of going out without a front tooth.
ReplyDeleteThe 'instant' implants that you see on TV makeovers are much less successful apparently, slow is better. I think mine took about six months in total. I'd do it again like a shot, funds permitting.
Also, don't worry about the extractions - compared to other work, they are relatively easy. Well done on getting it sorted out, you'll be glad that you did when you are able to smile (and eat corn on the cob, apples and so on) again!
My dentist said exactly the same thing - that the quick fixes are not nearlyn as good. Thanks for the tip about the plate. I think I'm pretty sure I will go for one even if it's just temporary and not needed long term. I'm fnding it inhibiting at the moment.
