Hieeee! We have a nice, fine morning at the moment but there is a weather warning for heavy rain tomorrow and strong-ish wind for part of Monday. I'm thankful for the warning and will tie up my runner beans more securely today. They are still fruiting well and I don't want them cut short! :-)
First of all - Alison, with your shortbread recipe, do you use the usual ratio of ingredients and replace some of the flour with semolina? I'd love to have a go at this.
Yesterday started with Slimming World as usual. It was really quiet and not many people stayed which was a shame, but I lost a bit of weight and am now quite close to being back in my target range so that's good.
Being on the social team, I stay and help to clear up afterwards. I used to do things like put the tables and chairs away but since my back has been a bit fragile, they won't let me. So I clear my area (I do the weighing) and then things like checking the kitchen, putting mugs away, other stuff that doesn't involve heavy lifting. By the time I've done that, the chairs and tables are more or less done so I don't feel guilty that I'm not helping with them!
I was wondering about that - I think it goes right back to childhood when my parents were always the ones who helped - to tidy up, get things out, make tea and coffee, all that sort of stuff. I think I just acquired the vibe from them. The problem with that is the then people think you must be a good organiser/leader which isn't necessarily the case.
Anyway, it's lovely that the others make sure the oldie doesn't lift too much and stop her when she does! 😂
Then I did my weekly shop - so much money for very little; it's almost frightening how quickly prices are rising. I know our food prices have been kept perhaps unnaturally low in the past but it is still worrying. Anyway, I got what I needed and I'm rather hoping I won't need to shop next Friday. That would be good.
I had a message from Alex. Poor chap, he has some sort of virus and is feeling rough so there was no cookery lesson. Quite apart from him feeling unwell, I don't want to catch anything from him just before a holiday! Fingers crossed he will feel loads better again soon.
Some of you my remember I 'lost' my window cleaner (retirement) last year and decided I would do it myself to save money. It was a good idea and worked well for a few months but my enthusiasm tailed off fairly quickly. It's not a job I enjoy very much really. So yesterday, a local company started cleaning my windows and it is so nice to look out through clean glass again. They're coming every six weeks which is more often than Gary came, and they are doing the garden room windows as well.
I'm happy!
Today and tomorrow are both clear in my diary which feels nice. Time to plan my meals, start getting stuff out* for Center Parcs and work out if I need to get anything, ponder on Festive matters, read, craft, catch up on stuff . . .
(*including things like dishwasher powder, cleaning cloths, etc, as well as coffee, etc - they do provide but not always enough)
And I do have some washing to do today, given that tomorrow will be wet.
It's definitely turned cooler, hasn't it. I'm sitting here in my pjs and one of my snuggle hoods feeling nice and cosy. I really don't want the heating on until the start of November if I can possible help it. Fingers crossed!
My heating came on this morning, for the first time. It has definitely turned cooler here this week. I'm getting all the auumn feels now, not to mention the rain!
ReplyDeleteI'm meal planning and shopping, myself, later. So it will be interesting to see how much it all comes to. I've noticed a lot of price increases recently.
I hope Alex feels better very soon.
Have a lovely day. Xx
I agree - it really does feel autumnal now. It's not just the leaves, etc.
DeleteI have my heating turned off so it doesn't 'accidentally' come on, and while the light is still good, I will use my little electric heater and use solar power when appropriate, but that won't be for long now. It's amazing the difference more diffused light makes to generating power. xx
I’m trying not to put the heating on but yesterday I was a bit chilly sitting at the computer for a Teams call-had to put off my camera and nip to the wardrobe to get a hoodie. If you swap some of your flour for rice flour in making shortbread, you will get a softer biscuit and if you swap in semolina it will be lovely and crunchy. Very cold butter and cold hands are the secret to great shortbread but I own up to using my food processor these days! Like you, Joy, I am always one of the people who helps set up and clear away/wash up at meetings. Think it’s back to the days of being a Brownie/Guide. Have a good weekend in preparation for your holiday. Catriona
ReplyDeleteIt's warmed up quite nicely in the sun now but the shade feels cool. Thanks for the top about rice flour and semolina. I have both as I use them in shaping my doughs. And, yes, I use Thermione too. :-) xx
DeleteThe shortbread - 225g plain flour, 100g semolina, 225g butter, 100g butter
ReplyDeleteMethod as usual 😀🤗
Alison in Devon x
Many thanks. xx
DeleteIt is definitely much cooler these days, in fact my central heating had clicked on when I woke up this morning and it's only set at 15 degrees. It felt very luxurious to wake up to a warm room.
ReplyDeleteEverything seems to have literally gone up overnight in Booths. We went for a coffee this morning, and my black Americano had gone from £3.10 to £3.35 and then the bread rolls that I usually buy had gone from £1.40 to £1.85, we were both a bit shocked.
That was chilly - it is nice to get up and feel cosy and warm, I agree.
DeleteBooths isn't the cheapest place anyway, I gather, so those rises must feel shocking, as you said. Very difficult. xx
It was really cool here in our area last week but has warmed up more once again. It will go back and forth like this for awhile I think. I just blogged about the Fall colors already starting and snapped some pretty photos of them. I wonder if we will be having an early Fall this year?
ReplyDeleteI do feel our autumn has started early. Leaves arde turning quite quickly round here and I wonder if it is because of the really hot spells we had earlier. My little p[ear on a pot shed its leaves a while ago, even though I klept it watered. There are buds so it's not dead! :-)
Deletexx
While cool here, it is still not cool enough to shut off the air conditioning. Hopefully that happens very soon. Prices keep rising here in Canada as well. I so wonder when they will stop.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Not trying to sound pessimistic, but not for a while, I suspect. We're in that cycle now, not helped by the actions and deeds of - let's call them idiots in power, shall we?

So far we haven't put the heating on but it has certainly started to turn colder especially in the evenings. This afternoon it has been pouring with rain!
ReplyDeleteIt's good that everybody in the social team has a role to play and each one is just as important to the team effort.
Yes, it's a good team, that's for sure.
DeleteIt just generally feels cooler and a bit damper, doesn't it? xx
