Wednesday

Good morning, everyone.
There was a very attractive sunset last night.  Not 'stunning' just pretty and gentle so I popped out to take a few photos.  I love a good sunset.



Yesterday was really nice.  I went to Morrisons for a few bits and bobs and came back with more than was on my list - ooops!  Nothing particularly extravagant though.

Once that was all away, I popped over the cul de sac to Chris for a cupps and a good natter.  She's been away/busy and so have I so it's been a while since we last caught up.  I took over some tomatoes and a courgette for her and, in return, she has promised me a few of the cooking apples from her tree when they are ready.  Nice.

After lunch I popped round to Mel's and had coffee.  Mel has been going to Slimming World and has lost (and kept off) a fair amount of weight and she told me all about how it works and so on.  Now, I'm not a club kind of person but I've lost focus and I truly don't want to undo all the good work since last November so I'm going to give it a go and see, starting this week.  Totally coincidentally, there's a free membership voucher in Woman magazine this week so that's a tenner minus the cost of the mag saved.
You see, now the boundaries enforced by a poorly gallbladder have gone, I need something to build structure again.  It's hard to explain but I really think this will help - for a time anyway.
Time will tell.

Anyway, after that, Beth came round on her way home from work.  Before dinner, we popped round the allotment and came back with another load of goodies.  We're trying the apples and we picked a pear each to wrap in a paper bag and see if it is ready to ripen.  The plums have been very poor but there were two left, both looking sound, so that's one each.  There were more runners, tomatoes and baby corn and we started on the Maris Piper potatoes, just to see, and there were loads of potatoes in the very small bit that we dug so that's excellent.

Today, after tuition, I'm off to a friend's for lunch.  This is someone who lived just down the road from me here but they moved and we sort of lost contact.  I'm feeling a bit nervous but am hoping we can pick up where we left off.  I'm a bit of a gadabout at the moment, aren't I?  It's so nice!

It should be a lovely day, fingers crossed.

  1. It sounds as though you are happy and busy which is always a good way to stop nibbling between meals I find!
    I've been wondering how your weight regime has been going but didn’t,t like to ask. It seems ages since you mentioned it .
    To me it sounds like an excellent idea to join Slimming World for a while.
    They have really interesting recipes and a friend of mine lost weight and was really successful keeping it off when she joined.
    She found the maintenance plan very useful too..
    Winter is a tricky time to slave off temptation I find.

  2. Hi, Sue. I haven't mentioned it for a while because nothing has really happened. It's time to deal with that - a plateau shouldn't become the level pathway!
    The recipes are what decided it really. It seems a very sensible way to go, very similar to what I like to do but with boundaries. I'm happy to give it a go and if I find the club too much I can always do it online.
    I truly don't want to go back to how it was before so MUST do something definite.

  3. I'd looked into SW too, but it's too expensive for me - even online it's just as dear. Husband has now lost about a stone and a half, but I've been stuck at the same weight for ages and ages now, it's so depressing. I do know I need to get more exercise. The sunset photo is lovely, we have some wonderful sunsets here too.

  4. That's a shame. I agree, it isn't cheap and it was a factor I had to think about carefully before coming to a decision. Finger crossed it will all work out for me.

  5. First of all, Joy, that's a very pretty sunset. I love sunrises as much as sunsets, mainly because a whole heap of houses block our view of sunsets, but we can just see sunrises over the sea … I say "just" because our neighbour's hedge is now partially blocking the view yet again. He doesn't get it cut as often as he should, sadly.
    Enjoy your gadding about, especially your meeting with the person with whom you lost contact.

  6. I can highly recommend Slimming World. The whole ethos is really of sensible eating and for me it has been fantastic, I've lost just over 3 and a half stones since December. I'm not a club type person either and rarely stay for the meeting after weigh-in, but the whole atmosphere in the class is very supportive and that has definitely helped me. Hope it helps you too.

  7. I think it sounds like a good plan - sometimes being accountable to others makes you keep on track and you also have some support. I think the downfall of such clubs is keeping the weight off afterwards - I expect it is just making some slight adjustments to your diet that you can continue with afterwards that makes the difference. Changing habits is always difficult I find - my diet has quickly moved from being fairly healthy with a few weaknesses to not so great whilst we have been busy over the last few weeks. Anyway I wish you well and look forward to any good ideas on the subject!

  8. It sounds as if you have pretty sensible eating habits anyway, but SW is perfect for being systematic and organised about it. I lost 12 kg over about 9 months with SW, and that slow steady progress really helped to change my eating habits and think twice about how I cook. I have put a couple of kg back on since (cough) but the habits have stayed. It is expensive, but it's worth paying for at least 6 months for the motivation and support. Once you know how the SW system works there's no need to carry on with membership though -- just keep up the weekly weigh-ins and continue to use the system of counting Syns. I agree that the recipes are excellent, but you can still access those online without membership (I bought a couple of books as well).

  9. That was a lovely sunset. I don't get to see as many as I would like, never in the right place at the right time. There are too many houses here.

    I think all the slimming clubs depend on how your mind works and whether the approach suits. I know a few people who swear by Slimming World so it's a good place to try. The folks I know who have tried prefer it to Weight Watchers, but then WW works for lots of people too.

    When the hairy bikers had their on-line club going, I did that for a while. Since they closed it down, the old Hairy Dieters FaceBook group has become the Happy Dieters and is useful as a place to commiserate/celebrate depending on progress and good for asking questions of others, so may be worth a visit if your a FaceBook-y person. In terms of something to use as a food diary etc MyFitnessPal is good. I only use the free version and it's fine for tracking calories and exercise and progress. You can put in your own recipes and calculate fairly accurate nutrition details for them too. For anyone put off by the cost of slimming world or wanting an on-line tool to help them out, it might be worth a look. I have to diet so slowly (no willpower and will binge eat to ridiculous levels if I feel like I am depriving myself) and using it to track food and exercise is working for me...

    Actually, the Hairy Dieter books are pretty good, tho I am veggie, there is plenty in the non-veggie books that is either veggie or easy to modify to be veggie and the recipes don't feel too much like rabbit food :-) - their veggie book is good.

    Viv, You're right, changing ingrained habits can be desperately hard and even when you think you've done it, back they bounce again. So frustrating.
    Veronica, how lovely to hear from you. How are things? I'm a great believer in slow and steady wins the day. I know the weekly fee sounds a lot but it is less than an only half decent bottle of wine. I can see that I will spend a fortune on the books though, that being one of my many weaknesses. As I said yo Viv, I hope I do as well as you.
    Crystal Witch, I hadn't realised that the Hairy Dieters club had closed. I wonder why. I am a fb person so must look it up, thank you. I like their books too and their programmes. Very watch-able.

Not a real sea view from upstairs, either, Joy as we have a dormer house, and the rooms don't face towards the sea, although I can - if I stand on the loo seat and lean out of the Velux sky light - see the sea! But not an advisable or comfortable thing to do! It reminds me of the old music hall song … "With a ladder and some glasses, I can see the 'Ackney Marshes, if it wasn't for the 'ouses in between!"
