Saturday

Good morning, everyone.  I'm typing this somewhat slowly and laboriously on an onscreen keyboard as a week ago I spilt water over my laptop and now some of the keys don't work.  I guess it will have to go in but I am horribly afraid that it won't be repairable and I shall have to replace it.  Well, not 'have' exactly, but you know what I mean.  And I have discovered that my screen typing is no better than my usual typing.

Yesterday was a day of two halves.  The morning was lovely.  Warm and sunny and perfect for gardening.  We spent the time watering and then lifting up the netting and weeding around the emerging mange tout, sugar snaps and French beans.  Very fiddly work and it took absolutely ages but, once done, we could see that the netting seems to have stopped the damage done by the pigeons and there are some nice, healthy plants there that should provide us with vegetables in some weeks' time.

We're quite proud of our plot now.  It's gone from being one of the messiest to one of the neatest and we're so looking forward to the fresh fruit and veg we will get, barring disasters.

Then Beth came back to mine and we sat outside and chatted over coffee while the cleaner finished inside.  It felt terribly decadent to be so idle while someone else did my work for me.  We looked through some old photos, some of which I will keep but many I will just discard as they don't tell any story at all or the story they tell is a 'bad' one.

Then, after lunch, as I was driving across country, the heavens opened.  It was torrential and then some.  I have never driven in such rain and I never want to again.  If I hadn't been part of a 'convoy', I'd have stopped, but with such limited visibility, stopping in a line of vehicles didn't seem sensible.  There was considerable surface flooding too and I felt very sorry for the learner driver ahead of me.

Never mind, it cleared up eventually and, goodness knows, we need the rain.

Today I'm hoping to go to a shopping precinct I have not visited before, which is supposed to have a huge M&S that has a home department as well as the clothes and food.  New month, new pension.  Yay!  Our M&S stopped selling home goods a while ago and I do miss that.  I think we will have a good time.

Well, I can smell the coffee so I guess it is time to get moving.  The sun is shining and the birds are evidently happy.  It's going to be a great day.

  1. At home, I work on a desk computer, not a laptop, so the keyboard is separate. If liquid gets to it, I know for sure I have to replace it. So I usually buy the cheapest on the market as I know I might forget again to be careful and again liquid (usually coffee or water) will get to it, so at least I don't spend much money on keyboards and I'm not dependent on technicians. Even the cheapest keyboard can serve you for many, many years, provided you're careful about liquid.

  2. If the laptop is working fine apart from the keyboard itself, then you could just plug in a external keyboard. It would attach on a USB port and is a considerably less troublesome than sending it away for repair or getting a new machine... though it does make the using of the laptop slightly less convenient. I have been known to sit my external keypad straight on top of the laptop's own keyboard.

  3. Thank you, both of you, for your advice. I never thought of an external keyboard! I think I will put it in for repair and then see what the options are.
