Monday

Good morning, everyone.  Thank you for your lovely messages about Mum and Dad's 'book'.  We are indeed a fortunate family to have this treasure to read and to keep their memories alive.

I finished the editing yesterday morning, Dad made the changes and, on reading through, found there were more changes he wanted to make.  I suspect it has always been thus and there must be a point at which the author says 'enough's enough!'.  He has decided not to add any more material because, as he says, what he would have added is as much part of my story, or the boys' stories, if we should want to add to it.

John's down next weekend so I guess he will go through the same process with it.  And I might, just might possibly enquire about the cost of self publication.  Dad isn't keen but that's because he doesn't want the hassle, I think.

At the moment, I'm quite keen on continuing the story although, goodness knows, I'm no writer and, already, I'm not sure how to organise things.  Life isn't a series of neat, tidy strands running either parallel or consecutive to each other, it's a great big, tangled mish-mash of events and developments within the obvious basic age time-line.  Actually, I suppose the time line is the place to start and, when Dad lets me have a copy, I might try to do a time line for us all rather than just me.

I'm back off home this morning.  When I get there, there's the usual unpacking and getting washing into the machine, having some breakfast and checking over today's tuition planning before hopping off down to the allotment to do some work.  Today I will be happy if I clear the baby corn bed and the two small raised beds - tasks that should be perfectly achievable within the time I have.  I need to be back by 2:30 so I can wash, brush up and change, not because of tuition but because immediately afterwards Beth and Alex are picking me up and we're off to the Hare for our first meal out together since March.  Last March we had a family meal at the Blue Strawberry to celebrate Dave's birthday; the virus was looming by then and I did feel slightly uncomfortable in such a crowded environment.  No one came to any harm though and the following week lock-down started which put paid to any more gallivanting.

So that's today.  It should be a good and productive day, fingers crossed.  Now I need to go and check the Hare's menu so I don't dither for ages before making any choices.
Have a lovely Monday, whatever you do and stay safe.  xx

Sunday

Good morning, everyone.

I'm having a peaceful weekend here at my Dad's.

Several years ago, Mum wrote several 'chapters' on what life was like for her as a child which we in the family greatly enjoyed.
Then Dad wrote an article for the local garden and allotment association newsletter about his childhood experiences learning to produce fruit and veg under the guidance of his grandad.  That was also of great interest and, I gather, well received.

Recently, Dad collected these together and added to them to create a 'family book' about the background to our family and about their life and times.  He's almost finished it now (it's not proper book length) and has asked me to proof read it through.

So that's what I've been doing this weekend.  It's harder than it sounds; I am finding it all so interesting that I keep forgetting I need to be editing it!  I don't think I'm just saying it because it's Mum and Dad's work but I've always enjoyed reading social history and this is absolutely fascinating, all about people I remember with affection.
It's a coincidence that I've just finished Flora Thompson's Lark Rise to Candleford trilogy and have just downloaded  Still Glides the Stream which re a similar genre.
So at the moment I'm soaking happily in social history and loving it!

I'm hoping I will get it finished for Dad this weekend although he has thought of things that he wants to add.  I suppose it's like that when it is so personal.

So that's me today.  xx

Saturday

Good morning, everyone.  It's a lovely, sunny start to the day although Dad's heating clicked in so it must be a bit chilly outside.

It was another pleasant day yesterday.
Chris came round for a chat and it was sunny and warm enough to sit out in the garden, a first for this week.

The Hare got back to me via a message I left with them and now Beth, Al and I have a table booked for Monday evening.  It's the first time any of us have eaten out since February so we are, understandable, a bit nervous, but I've heard from others that the staff are doing the whole distancing thing very well indeed so fingers crossed.

On the way over to Dad's, I stopped off at the allotment (which looked a lot better in the sunshine) and found tomatoes, courgettes, apples and pears to take to Dad.
The pears are now wrapped in kitchen towel and sitting in the pantry to ripen, the tomatoes will go into a sauce I am making with meatballs for dinner tonight, the courgettes will also be eaten this weekend and the apples are in a bowl to be used as and when.

Rather excitingly, there are mini French beans on the plants now.  Maybe, next weekend . . . they seem to be quite fast growing so you never know!

As planned, I'm going to spend some time there as much as I possibly can next week and Beth plans to join me when she can.  It will make for a full week but not a 'busy' one, if you know what I mean, with loads of calories burnt which has to be a good thing, doesn't it?

Today will be an easy day with not a lot happening apart from some cooking, reading the paper, maybe a walk to the local mini Tesco, if necessary and the like.  No complaints here.
I hope your day is good too.  xx

Friday

Good morning, everyone and welcome to happy Friday (I'm happy, anyway!)
It's a fine morning, not wet or anything and it doesn't feel too chilly either.  Yesterday started off the same although by around four it was raining quite hard.

Yesterday turned out quite busy in the end.

It started off with my booked swim at the gym at seven.  It was great - there were around seven people in the pool at busiest and by the time I'd done my half hour, there were just three of us.   I decided to work quite hard so was buzzing by the time I got out - I enjoyed it so much!
Then it was home for a coffee, a hot shower and hair wash and then back into town.

I parked in the same car park (because it's free) and walked on into town where I picked up my prescription and then set off on a bit of a shop trawl.
Everyone I was was wearing face covering, everyone was smiley and very polite with lots of 'after you'/'no, after you' exchanges which made for a very pleasant time while walking around.

However, and this surprised me very much indeed, the service in the shops was appalling.  Well, maybe not as bad as that but it's usually really good and yesterday . . .

In Boots, picking up my prescription, I and another person had to wait for ages (well, a good ten minutes) while the person who was at the counter dithered around doing other stuff and having what looked like chats to the others in the pharmacy area.

Then I popped into M&S, known for good service, and they had two people on the relevant tills and a great queue of people waiting to pay (including me).  They also seemed really slow and it took a long time.

We have a Debenhams in town and I like it although I rarely use it (which, I gather, is a problem Debenhams is having generally) as it never seems to have quite what I'm looking for.  However, there was a clothes sale on so I went in and got lucky with a very pretty dress, reduced from sixty something pounds to just over twenty which seems very good value.  The ladies clothing floor was quite busy and people had lots of garments over their arms but there was just one (one!!!  In that big area) paying desk and, again, slow service and long queues.  It was quite hard to find and they didn't seem to have many assistants around to ask either.

To be fair, everyone was most courteous and it wasn't their fault there weren't many of them and, also to be fair, the service in The White Company and on Copenhagen was as good as it always is.

What did I buy.  Well, more than I should have, probably.
In M&S I got a couple of bras in the next cup size down (woo hoo!!!)
In Debenhams, I bought that dress.
In The White Company I treated myself to some of their wickedly expensive but absolutely lovely room sprays.  A little goes a long way so it's not quite as spendthrift as it sounds and they are so gorgeous.
And in Copenhagen I bought (don't laugh) a carrot sharpener!

After all that I decided to be very, very well behaved and not go to Lakeland!  Also, I was getting tired by then.

Once home, I had lunch and then, rather reluctantly, headed off to the garage.  Oh, the mess!!  It was a case of getting the bin and recycling box round to the back and just taking one thing at a time.  So I did and I reckon I got well over half of it sorted.  There are some big boxes that need cutting up for the cardboard sack and some very old jamjars that need to go into the glass recycling as well as some wicker baskets that Beth can use so I'll take them round next week.  I found a few treasures.  Either Beth or Dave's old teddy - no way he's going in the bin - and some Clothkits - grey corduroy trousers, size 12/14 so they will probably work fine for me and a pretty white blouse age 5 - 6 so no idea how I can use that but no way is it getting chucked, not Clothkits.  Maybe Beth can sell it on eBay.

I'd like to have properly finished but got weary of making decisions and fed up of the dust so I'll carry on next week.  Really, there's not a lot left to do now and Kevin will be able to see clearly what I need taking and disposing of.
Then I will get the units and Beth and I can put them together.
And I will have a tidy garage, probably for the first time in my life.  LOL

Today is much easier.
I was booked for a swim at seven but, after four organised blocks of exercise Monday through to Thursday and I did push things more in yesterday's swim, I'm feeling a bit achey this morning so I cancelled that and will just do the 'homework' Lindsey has set me to do.
I have to tidy up for the cleaners, pack for the weekend and Chris is coming round for a chat later on this morning.
Then I'm off to Dad's for the weekend.

As always, I may or may not post over the weekend but I'll be back on Monday anyway.
Stay warm, safe and happy.  xx

Thursday

A very good morning to you!  I have no idea of the weather, it's still pretty dark, but yesterday was very pleasant for most of the day until late afternoon when it started raining, just in time for my newly washed car to be brought home.  Oh well . . .

No swim yesterday morning because I had personal training midday.  Since my shoulder 'went', I've been having half hour sessions which we recently extended to three quarters of an hour.  Yesterday we were back to the full hour and it did feel good to be back to full time again.  I think the return to swimming and aqua-exercise has really helped the shoulder and there are no repercussions this morning, which is good.

Before then, I had my 'meeting' - just a chat really - with my new student and parent and that was a pleasant time.  The student seems keen to get started and happy to work with their friend so I think it will all go very nicely.  Being year 6, they can walk to mine from school without an adult and will be picked up afterwards.  I'm looking forward to working with them.

In the afternoon, Jeff turned up and sorted the outside space out good and proper.  It now looks a lot neater, thankfully.

The rest of the day was spent in washing, drying, ironing and general pottering about.  The MOT/service created no problems, although they always do a 'health check' and have found that the tyres will need some attention in around 4000 miles, as will the front brakes.  They're OK now and, as my average mileage tends to be around 4000 miles, we're talking about next year's service/MOT.  It always feels great when that's over and done for the year - hopefully the only big expenditure.

I have to say, I always get good service from the Peugeot garage but this year the service has been outstanding and when I get the satisfaction questionnaire through, I will have some very nice things to say.  It makes such a big difference to the overall experience.

On to today and, really, it's another really pleasant day.  I have a swim booked for seven after which it will be home for a shower and hair wash before setting back out into town to pick up my prescription and have a bit of a shop trawl.  I never thought I was much of a window shopper but I have discovered that I am.  Now I'm slim, I can envisage wearing (or not) clothes I see and the back, knees and ankles don't hurt as I walk around so now and again it's all good fun.

Also, it's time to start looking for little gifts for people.  Four months until Chr*stm*s is about the right time and, while we don't buy big gifts within the family now, nice little food or smelly gifts are always appreciated.  Indeed, last winter I gave Dad a jar of some 'posh' pickled onions (if that's not an oxymoron) and he liked them so much he tracked down the company and now has several jars tucked away in the pantry!
I will also make gifts - fudge, fruit liqueur, etc, - so by the time December rolls around, I will be all set.

Anyway, enough of that.
In the afternoon, I am going to continue sorting things out in the garage.  Last week, an advert came through the door from an enterprising local company, focusing on small skips for households (or communities) to hire seeing as it's not so easy to get to the local 'dump' at the moment.  Great idea, thought I, an was about to follow it up when I saw, on Facebook, an ad from an acquaintance, Kevin, who basically has a white van and clears messes up for people.  He's done my garage before!  So I got in touch and he's coming round next Thursday to take a look and give me a quote.

What I want to do is get rid of all the clutter and then I have my eye on some storage shelves so that the rest of the stuff that I want to keep can be organised on shelves instead of an untidy mess on the floor.  It will all be so much better once that is all done and I will be able to find everything much more easily.
So, before Kevin comes, I want to get all the keeping stuff moved to the back and all the going stuff at the front so he can see exactly what needs taking.  That is what I will be starting this afternoon.

Then I will need to clean and tidy myself up and get off to Slimming World.  I'm looking forward to that!

So it's quite a full day but enjoyable as well.  I seem to have rambled on for ever so well done if you've got to the end.
Stay safe, well and happy!  xx

Wednesday

Good morning; welcome to a chilly but sunny September morning.  We're nowhere near yet, but I do wonder when the first frost will arrive.  That will finish off the tomatoes and I don't like to think of that at all.

Yesterday pretty much went according to plan.  Tuition was fine and there's no more now until Monday.  Aquacise was enjoyable and I have next week's session booked now.  I ought to go into the site and book some swimming sessions as well.

I got the washing and the ironing done too so that was good.

This morning I was up and dressed early as the car was being picked up at quarter past seven.  It's now there ready for its service, MOT and annual polishing up (more than I give it, anyway).  Later on, I will go online and pay the bill and that will be the biggest expense of the year done and dusted (hopefully) - apart from petrol, that is.
They have a service agreement but you have to make monthly payments of what they say and there's no interest paid or anything so I choose to pay a certain amount into my savings account which more than covers things like that.  I know interest rates are very low but it's still better than nothing and at least I have access to my own money as and when needed.

Mid morning, my new mum and student are coming for a chat.  I know I said no more but this student is doubling up with another so it takes no extra time; I really don't have any extra time slots now, not if I want to have a life!  During lockdown, I decided exactly how much time I wanted to give to this and I'm not deviating from it.

And then it is personal training.  We're doing it online this week which is something positive that has evolved from lockdown.  I prefer face to face but when that's not possible, I don't have to miss a session nowadays!

And finally, Jeff is over to work his brand of magic on the garden.  The weeds are still fighting back so it will look an awful lot better once he's finished.

The car will be dropped back early evening so I will feel mobile again.

So that's my day.  All very ordinary, regular stuff, nothing particularly unusual.  Just how I like it!
Have a brilliant day and stay safe and well.  xx

Tuesday

Good morning, everyone.  A pinch and a punch for the first of the month and white rabbits to everyone as September begins.  I tend to go by the astronomical date for the start of Autumn which, this year, is September 22nd but lots of people go by the meteorological date, September 1st.
Whichever it is, there's no doubt that we can have some very fine weather in September; cooler mornings and evenings with lovely, sunny days and, of course, lengthening nights.  I rather love autumn - the aromas, the colours, the sunsets, the celebrations.  So lovely.

(thank you, Google Images)
The autumn term was always my favourite term too, as a teacher.  There are so many lovely things happening, interesting things that lend themselves to great crafts and enjoyable 'work'.  Christmas, of course, is the climax to the term and I always loved being involved in and, in later year, producing the infant Christmas show, not to mention making gifts and decorations and those ubiquitous paper chains that had to be made to a self-chosen repeating colour sequence (bit of Y1 maths there!).
I wonder what it will all be like this year, all those events and celebrations that punctuate the autumn term.  Different, I am sure.

Yesterday stayed fine and warm enough to feel comfortable.  No heating needed yesterday, thank goodness.
I had a lovely swim in the morning.  There must have been near the maximum number of people in the pool but everyone's got the idea now and it all worked really well.  There are three lanes for faster swimmers and a wider line for us snails where we meander obediently around the edge of the lane while anyone slightly faster went up and down the middle of the lane.  Plenty of room and no holdups.

After lunch, I didn't feel at all inclined to get up and do anything but the car really did need a clean out and a tidy up.  It's been used as a carrier of things to the allotment and back all summer so there was a lot of dried grass and dust/dried mud, etc and there's no way I would want it to go to its service on Wednesday looking like that.
It took a good couple of hours as I had everything out that would come out, the sweeper was applied rigorously to all the carpeting and seats, things got put away, I 'rationalised' the shopping bags (chucked out the old ones that were falling apart) and sorted out the allotment box which is now in the shed as it shouldn't be needed much more this year.  I also applied a bit of elbow grease to the windscreen and dashboard, wing mirrors, etc.  The only thing I didn't do was wash the outside as they will do that on Wednesday as part of the service and it wasn't as awful as the inside anyway.
By the time I had finished it was as clean and tidy inside as any car of mine has ever been and I was ready for a sit down, a cuppa tea and a clear conscience!

Today I have a very busy morning.  I'm off for an early morning tuition, then back home for another one.  There's no more for the rest of this week now; the children are back at school on Thursday after a training day tomorrow and my proper timetable starts on Monday

Then I have an aquacise class booked so it's off in my nice, inwardly clean car to the gym.

The rest of the day will have to be homey stuff.  There's washing, drying, ironing, changing sheets - all that sort of normal stuff to do.  It keeps me out of trouble, anyway!
Hoping you stay out of trouble too - have a fab day and be happy.  xx
