Good morning, everyone, and what a surprise!  It is dark, gloomy and pouring with rain right now.  To be fair, I would not have heard any storming overnight (hearing aids out, etc) so maybe it's not surprising to my neighbours but I didn't expect it!

Another surprise.  Perched on the roof opposite to my house and it stayed put long enough for me to grab my camera and zoom in.  A grey heron, Google search tells me.  Definitely not local so I hope s/he found their way home again.

I got stuff done yesterday before it got too hot.
Lindsey did circuits outside which was lovely.  It was warm but there was a refreshing breeze.

I came home again, Kay arrived and, while she was sorting my inside out, I did some garden stuff.  Potted on an indoor plant that had outgrown its pot, did some weeding and some slab scraping and trimmed the lower leaves off the tomatoes.  Now the lower fruit can catch the sun better.

It got quite hot in the afternoon but by then I was inside, blinds drawn, doors and windows open and fans on.  There was still a breeze and it kept my living room at a very pleasant temperature.

Today and, particularly, tomorrow and Thursday are expected to be very hot indeed and very humid, which is worse.  We're just not geared up to such weather in the UK.  Houses are built and insulated to retain heat which is a Very Good Thing most of the time, just not in a heatwave.  I gather temperature records may be broken before the end of the week.  We will see.

Chris and I will be off to Groove first thing.  We were expecting to walk there and back but that depends on the rain.  A bit later, Sharon is round for my six weekly hair sort-out.  Then the rest of the day is my own.
I seem to have a lot of cucumber so I think I will make some simple pickles with some.  I seem to be having cravings for pickles at the moment - beetroot and pink onion.  Some cucumber will make a nice difference.

And we are now in the middle of a storm - that was a big crack of thunder just now!  I certainly won't need to give my garden its morning drink, will I?  It's pouring and I've just had to close the landing window and wipe the sill.

Right, I have to get my other social media stuff sorted so I will say goodbye.  Please, stay safe in this extreme weather and stay as chilled as possible.  Bye.  xx

  1. We had lots of rain last night, which has freshened everything up nicely. Our schools are closing at midday until the heat wave abates. That's good for the children and staff, but a worry for working parents.

    1. I checked our school site for any messages about this but nothing. The school does have air con so maybe it is more reasonable inside. I'm there tomorrow for a couple of meetings so - we will see. xx

  2. We have only had literally a couple of spots of rain here in the South East . Storms were predicted but none came..it really is very unpredictable..

    1. It's just clearing up here in Mid Essex. These things are very localised, aren't they. The garden looks happy but it's not going to help the humidity, is it? Oh, well, it is what it is and it won't last for ever (I hope)! :-) xx

  3. Does anyone near you have a fish pond? If so it will attract the heron, a neighbour of mine once lost 6 large koi carp from his back garden to a passing heron.

    1. I don't know, Hester. Maybe that's so although I've not seen a heron round here before. It was quite exciting. xx

  4. It was a surprise to look out early and see the car was wet from rain. Clear blue sky now and warming up - might be too hot for our exercise group!

    1. We have to be careful, don't we, in these hot days. Luckily, tomorrow's PT is early morning so it should be OK. If it was afternoon as before, I probably would have cancelled. xx

  6. Agree with Hester that the heron was probably fishing.
I keep chuckling to myself that soon our cucumbers will go from zero to full on glut - and I don’t make much pickle anymore!

  8. I was watching the scary lightning on the news tonight. Poor souls that had their house hit by lightning. It must have been terrifying. We've had wall to wall of hot unbearable sunshine today. I'd be glad of some rain to cool things down. That heron must have been a surprise. It's probably eyeballing someone's goldfish.

    1. One of our local secondaries got hit by lightning. It was quite a storm.
Rain would be nice as long as it doesn't add to the humidity.

I'm sure locals have ponds and that heron wasn't stupid. I wonder where he was based though. Hanningfield reservoir maybe, that's not too far as the crow - heron - flies. xx

  9. We are still getting more rain, which is something this corner of my province is not used to at all. It is supposed to rain all the rest of the week and a few days next week. I am beginning to think I should perhaps build an ark.

    God bless.

    1. lol - whatever they say, I am sure our climate is changing. I think rain is a blessing but. if it's not usual, it is a concern. xx

  10. How nice to see the heron, unless of course you keep fish and then they are a menace.
We haven't seen a heron here this year yet but there are some not too far away.
I don't think we had a single spot of rain here last week.
