22-03-25 - bread and some really good news

Morning, lovely people.  Welcome to Saturday and the start of the weekend.

Well, we did it.  After Slimming World, I got the loaf in the oven on a cold bake (no preheating the oven) which is a lot better because it's only five minutes longer and it takes fifteen minutes for my oven to heat up that high - cold bake is definitely cheaper.

And here we are.  I was so thrilled with how it came out - and the house smelled amazing!
Isn't it lovely?
And I had to check the inside, didn't I.  This isn't down the middle, I just cut a bit off the side.  And it was delicious!

I enjoyed that bit.
I cut straight down the middle, Beth is having half and the rest is sliced (with difficulty) and in my freezer.

The crust was very crunchy and I think for the next one I will wrap the hot loaf in a clean tea towel which should soften the crust and make it easier to slice.

Today I'm using some discard to make Vanessa's crackers and I am also starting another loaf, this time half and half wholemeal which will make it more SW friendly and more what I like - I do prefer wholemeal bread.

I have some very good news - good for me, I mean.  After my blood test, I looked on my NHS online app today in case anything was through and it said everything was normal, no further action needed, which I am assuming means the high LDLs have been sorted.  Woo hoo!!  No 'discussion' re taking statins now.  The blood pressure readings are good too - I need to get them into a table and send that off.

Have a great day, everyone.  xx

(oops, posted early but never mind - it's been a really good day so I am sharing early.  Just imagine it's Saturday if you read it Friday evening)

    1. Must be, although there's a niggly little voice inside that's saying I haven't got it right and when I have my appt they will say it's all terrible! xx

    1. Thanks, Catriona. After the initial joy, I am tending to not quite believe it until I hear from the horse's mouth, so to speak. xx

  6. WooHoo indeed, very good news!
Your Bubbles loaf looks very professional, well done, a triumphant first try! So tempting, but sadly I do not like sourdough, never have done even as a child. I have a feeling I was once exposed to a strongly soured rye loaf, which made me dislike it. One of those things I wish I did like because I feel I'm missing out.

    1. Fingers crossed for when I go for my review meeting.
I didn't think I was particularly - I was doing the starter because I don't like to be beaten and past efforts have been dismal failures. But I'm finding that what I made yesterday is lovely. No idea why, perhaps my tastes have changed?? xx

  7. I have always started my breads in a cold oven, turn it on to take the chill off and then add the bread a minute later. I don't know if it's different with sourdoughs, but with yeasted breads this gives them a little boost before the heat kills the yeast.

Well done on your test results, it's always really good to hear isn't it. I always get brilliant results on the sugars, cholesterol and everything else, and ridiculously bad results on the blood pressure side of things.

    1. I've always preheated my oven for my yeasted bread but I will try a cold bake next time. It has to be easier on the fuel, doesn't it? xx

  8. Wow a wonderful loaf.
Well done on the blood tests, yesterday I was sent for by my local surgery for a discussion with an HCA regarding my cholesterol level 🙄
I’ll be re reading your recent posts because I too want to avoid statins by addressing my diet !

    1. I'm now having doubts, to be honest. I am wondering if I have misread or maybe all the results aren't in yet . . . Frustrating when you don't actually understand the info, just the 'satisfactory' bit and maybe that referring to something else.
The loaf is lovely though! Thanks. xx
