20-01-25

. .  and here we are pretty much two thirds of the way through January.  This month is just flying past for me.

I pretty much stuck to my simple plans yesterday.  I wrapped up warm and started sorting out the front.  It looks civilised now, although there's weeds emerging round the edges of the paving and you can see loads of bulbs coming up which is nice.  Some of the emerging leaves are pale from being under a mound of leaves but that will change soon enough.
I meant to take a few photos but forgot and, anyway, it was so gloomy, they wouldn't come out all that well anyway!
The back was really sore afterwards and I was a bit concerned but it's OK now so fingers crossed for circuits.  I think I just need to keep moving and stretching now.
Then I came in, had lunch and did the ironing so that, also, is all done.

Earlier in the day, I gave the bathroom a good clean as I do every time I use the shower to wash my hair.  It's an in-the-bath one with a zig-zag screen so, inevitably, the floor gets a bit wet and it seems the best opportunity to clean around everything as it all gets mopped up.

I think I forgot to say, I was a bit spendy a few days ago as Ray asked for the deposit for the trip to Carols at the RAH and I decided I may as well pay the lot and get it done.  I won't have to shell out next November/December when I will inevitably be spending a bit more anyway.
Apart from that, it's all going well and I think I am going to call these months 'Needs Only Months' because I don't think low or no spend describes it very well - not to me anyway.

And by 'need', I do not mean 'I really NEED that in my life right now'!!!

Today I am going to circuits and will adapt as necessary - I have already told Lindsey and she's really understanding.
Then Alex is coming over for a roast dinner so I will be busy in the kitchen.  Depending on when he goes, I might do a proper downstairs clean or I might just do the bits that show - I need to do one or the other as I have a friend over for coffee tomorrow morning and the carpet is a disgrace!

And that is that for today.  Have a great Monday, one and all.  Stay safe and keep warm.  xx

  1. I bet your garden looks so much better now that it's had a tidy up. I did the same on Saturday. Hope your back isn't too sore. I can highly recommend a good hot soak with some epsom salt

    1. It does, Cherie. I'm not looking out and thinking 'oh, dear' any more. Never though of Epsom salts but a good bath works wonders. xx

  2. I haven't done anything in the garden this last week so you are way ahead of me, Joy. My back is playing up a bit so I don't want to risk aggravating it too much. Glad your visit to the dentist was positive and hope that the next stage goes well too. We had a spendy week as well. Tumble dryer and vacuum cleaner both gave up. I'm very happy with the new ones. Have a great week whatever you have planned x

    1. Oh, I am sorry. Sometimes backs are nothing but trouble. I hope yours is sorted out soon.
Why do all the big things seem to go at once? I'm glad you like the new ones though - that's great! xx

  3. Garden is still too soggy as we have very damp weather here. I jerked my back yesterday when I was doing some cupboard sorting to had the heat pad out last night to give me some relief when I was watching CTM and Pottery Throw Down. Catriona

    1. Oh, no - not you as well. What a right lot we all are.
My heated fleece and hottie worked wonders so I bet your heat pad was a great help yesterday evening. Is it better today?
I need to catch up with Throw Down at some point. I enjoy it so very much. xx

  4. It's satisfying when jobs are completed. You feel you've earned your relaxation, somehow.

  5. Oh it’s so lovely to see the bulbs starting to peep through. I have some too but sadly no snowdrops as we moved house some months ago and it was too late for them. We had lots at the other house 🙁.
I think the term “Needs only month” serves very well. That was my intention for January but I’ve had to reassign it to February as we have had a couple of unexpected (not exactly unavoidable but read on) expenses.
Firstly, we have been aware for the past year or so that we need to replace our mattress but have been putting it off because of the high cost . Late last summer I went shopping with a friend who was choosing a new mattress. She spending rather a lot of money and certainly more than would be our budget. We tested it out in the shop. I thought it was great (nice and firm) but she was undecided and wasn’t sure whether to go for one a bit softer. After much debate she decided on the firmer one and hasn’t liked it since. Last week she said enough was enough and would I go shopping again. She’s much happier with the ones she has ordered and has offered me the almost new one for £1300 LESS than she paid for it! It was just too good a bargain to miss.
Then my granddaughter’s car went to the garage and I’ve helped her out with the bill. There is no public transport that goes to where she works and the nearest bus would involve walking along an unlit narrow lane with no footpath in the evening for almost a mile. Her parents and ourselves were taking it in turns to get her there until she recently passed her test so it was either a return to that whilst she gathered the money together or helping with the finances.
So January has been a write off but at least we started the month with a full freezer! Phew.
    Roll on pension day!

    1. To be honest, Eloise, I would call those nearer needs that wants. Good mattresses are shockingly costly nowadays and I agree, there was no way you could say 'no, thanks' to such a kind offer.
And the car repairs - also a necessity and that's what one does for ones grandchildren, isn't it. It goes with the role.
A shame about the lack of snowdrops but at least you have the chance of planting what you want where you want. Nice. It will be lovely to see what DOES come up, won't it.
It's pension week for me too - state pension tomorrow and teacher's pension on Thursday. They just lie there until the first of the new month but it makes the bank balance look healthy and that's always nice!
      xx

    2. My work pension is paid on 25th of the month so I move my state pension to a savings account when it arrives, then transfer it back to current account on 25th. This means my 4 weekly state pension has to last for a calendar month (12 months instead of 13 x 4 weekly payments) thus leaving me with a whole extra 4 week payment every year. I then use that for a holiday.
