Friday, 02-10-26

 Morning, everyone.  Welcome to Friday.
I'm feeling much more like myself now, thankfully.  Just a bit tired but I had a great night's sleep so no whinges today!

I was wondering what I could do for a Christmas craft project this year and I saw this:

This is a screen shot of the pattern which I have purchased after a bit of thought as it's not cheap but it seems very well written with lots of extra advice and I think it is really lovely.

The whole site is worth a look if you like that sort of thing - there's some gorgeous patterns there.

The stitches look easy but the construction will be a challenge and I need to buy yarn as it's cotton yarn, worsted/Aran weight.  However, the individual motifs I can make in my usual DK acrylic, for practise or for little decorations or cards.
And I could go for brighter colours if I wanted.

Now's the time to start thinking about it so I could start in November.

A bit more spendy stuff.  I'm sure we have all seen warnings about bad weather incoming, other potential national/international disasters, etc, etc, etc, not necessarily all generated by the sensationalist gutter press.  I tend to take these with a pinch of salt but, at the same time, a bit of common sense is a useful thing and, while I have no concerns with shelf stable stuff, I can't find the camping stove I thought I had so I've bought another and some spare cylinders.  You know - just in case.
I can't safely use it indoors but I have a garden room with one side openable - I'd much rather not but we will see.
(I can always use it on summer days - cleaner than a bbq!!)
Now I am wondering if I'm sensible or silly!

Thinking of spendy, I've been looking quite seriously at one of the Jo Malone Advent calendars (don't shoot me all at once, please) but today I woke to a bit of good news from my premium bonds (nothing dramatic but a bit of nice leading up to Christmas) and, suddenly, I don't really want that calendar very much after all.  Weird how a lot of 'wanting' is only because you can't, not because you genuinely want it.
When I go into town to get Beth's present (some Jo Malone perfume - we're both fans), I'll treat myself to one of my favourites that has run out - much more sensible!!  It can be one of my Twelve Days of Christmas gifts to myself.
(and I can get the yarn for that Christmas wreath now!!)
The rest goes into savings, probably into my Jolly Holidays account!  :-)

Wishing you a lovely Friday when everything goes well and everything works out as you want.
Take care and be safe.  xx

  1. That's a beautiful Christmas wreath! Not for the first time I wish I could crochet but I have no hope of following a pattern. Enjoy the creative process, I'll look forward to seeing a picture once complete, (all in good time!) best wishes, Melanie

    1. Isn't it gorgeous. Just my sort of thing and, actually, much easier than it looks. The most complicated bit seems to be a magic ring and I do them as a matter of habit now anyway!
(Hoping that's not Famous Last Words!!) xx

  2. I've stocked up my cupboards, not because of the scaremongering, but because the path from my bungalow to the road is very steep and I'm reluctant to break an ankle for the sake of a tin of baked beans.

    1. That is a very good point, Hester. If we do get an icy winter, things like that become a big issue. xx

  3. Hi Joy - I hope I’ve caught you before you have purchased your yarn, but the pattern actually specifies NOT cotton… Nicky

    1. It doesn't. I'm looking at it and it says (quoting): cotton holds the leaf points crisply and stops the ring stretching under its own weight. A smooth acrylic also works and is lighter but the petals will be softer and it must be blocked differently.
Where does it say NOT cotton, please?
(fingers are crossed because . . . yup, I've ordered) xx

    2. On p. 3 my copy says ‘acrylic or wool blend, not mercerised cotton (dense, glossy, the petals droop under their own weight).’ Strangely, my copy also includes several (OK, many!) pages marked ‘INTERNAL - NOT FOR CUSTOMERS’ in big red letters which seems to contain, amongst other things, faults found at pattern testing and their corrections. We seem to have different versions… Nx

    3. How very odd. I must look through the version sent to me and see if it's the same. I'll report back!! :-) xx

    4. Yes, very odd - but then a blanket pattern that I bought and downloaded from the same source has a second version with a link emailed to me within a couple of hours of downloading the first version. It will be interesting to see how our different versions compare once we have made them! Nx

    5. It will - and I have an update which I will write about in the next post. xx

  4. The wreath looks gorgeous. As for stocking up for emergencies - sensible, not silly. As long as we don't go out and buy a trolleyful of toilet rolls! (as I actually saw someone do at the start of Covid, I assumed they were planning on selling them on for a vast profit). xx

    1. Probably! I do have a supply of loo rolls but not a silly amount! :-) xx

  5. What a lovely wreath thats going to be, the cotton should be fine. That sort of project has me running for the hills, I’m a plain pattern sort of person, but I’ll watch yours with interest. Plodding on with the cardi 😀😊
I know exactly what you mean about going off stuff we want when we give ourselves permission to purchase……..suddenly becomes less desirable…….a quirk of human nature I suppose.

    1. It's odd, isn't it? It's too expensive a thing to get if more than half the items are not what I want. Common sense prevails! :-)

It's a very attractive thing, isn't it? Fingers crossed I can do it justice. xx

  6. The wreath looks gorgeous! And what a great Christmas craft project.
I think a camping stove is a sensible idea. They are quite inexpensive, and are useful for spontaneous picnics of the sausage butty variety :) And I learned my lesson about keeping a reasonable stock of foods in the cupboard during covid. X

    1. Mmm - except that it might be one of those scams. I'll give it a go anyway.

I'm looking forward to the stove coming next week. I might have a garden picnic and try it out. :-)
I think Covid caught a lot of people out in more than just food. Remember the loo roll panic? xx
